SD Music Video Premiere – featuring ‘The Cat’s Pajamas’
Miz Mandy, Releases Two New Music Videos with a San Diego Red Carpet Premiere on Saturday October 27th, 2012 at Flavor Del Mar
Since releasing her third album, MouseTrap, in late 2011, Miz Mandy has filmed two music videos, ‘Rising Sun’ and ‘The Cat’s Pajamas’. Filmed with two separate crews at different times of the year, Miz Mandy will publicly premiere both videos in San Diego on Saturday October 27th at Flavor Del Mar. ‘Rising Sun’ will be available for online viewing immediately following, whereas ‘The Cat’s Pajamas’ will not be made available until December of 2012
San Diego, CA. (PRWEB) October 05, 2012 – Pop singer, Miz Mandy, released her third album, ‘MouseTrap’, in late 2011. Produced by Los Angeles songwriter and composer, Ryan Franks, Miz Mandy claims that the new musical direction will challenge her fans “musically and lyrically. It’s very different from my past albums, but I think people will love it.” Ryan Franks agrees, “The fusing of dirty, trashed out synthesizer parts, lush strings, heavy grooves and some cool twists and turns in the vocals has created a different sound.” http://www.MizMandy.com/
Miz Mandy calls the new sound “Cinematic pop/rock” and says that she wrote the lyrics from the point of view of “a femme fatale, a desperate housewife or a Bond girl.” By Bond girl, she is referring to one particular track, ‘The Cat’s Pajamas’. The song is about a female double agent hired to kill a handsome male agent. She’s staking him at the pool and she is caught between doing what she is hired to do and what she really wants to do. “This song was just meant to be a video.” She said.
Mandy contracted with Illinois native and Director of her first music video, Frank Rice. “When Mandy came to me about doing a video, I instantly became excited. I loved the song… [The Cat’s Pajamas] has a very catchy chorus and I liked the play on the words. She uses a lot of metaphors to convey her feelings toward someone. I like that… Not too direct or literal.” He said. “I formed my vision based on Mandy’s lyrics. I know Mandy likes the quirky, kinda out-of-place stuff, but I felt that this song needed to be kept on a serious level. That steered my vision into shooting it more like a movie, rather than a traditional music video.” http://www.frankjricejr.com
Rice, who has directed music videos for JMD Records/Universal Music Group continues, “I reached out to my good friend and co-director, Nick Lam, for his technical and third eye expertise. He has a way of seeing things a little different, which helped with the many ideas and shots.”
Nicholas Lam, who has directed commercials for BMW, Proctor & Gamble and the Democratic National Committee, and TV pilots for E! Entertainment, CBS, 20th Century Fox, BET and Bravo Networks, described the song as, “sultry and fun, with just the right amount of edge to give it a Bond-like sheen without coming across as campy or contrived.” http://www.nicholaslam.com/
They all met a few times to talk about the details and the date was set. Associate Producer Nick Gibeault started to bring the different entities together: crew, budget and cast. “I love producing because challenges always arise, and I learn something new with every shoot.”
The treatment and shot list were created. Props and set décor were purchased, borrowed or made. And Mandy located her 60’s style costumes through local vintage thrift stores. A self-proclaimed lover of vintage, Mandy said, “I have quite a few stores that I regularly frequent and my collection of one-of-a-kind pieces has really grown. I wanted authentic costuming for the video, so I made my rounds and came up with what I found was the right look.”
The directors chose to go with long-time collaborator and veteran cinematographer Nicolas Martin, who has shot videos for such big names as Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and Rihanna. No expense was spared in the making of the video, utilizing dual RED Epic cameras, a 26ft crane, a 3-ton lighting package and a state-of-the-art steadicam. Frank adds, “’The Cat’s Pajamas’ was shot in 5k, allowing for a better cinematic feel and look.”
The video was shot in one full day in July at a private location in San Diego, California. The crew consisted of: Emmy Award winning Producer Andy Dugan, Director of Photography Nicolas Martin, Steadicam Operator Nathan Stern, Camera Assistant Marie Amelie-Martin, Gaffer Morgan Mercier, Grip Chuck Bo, Make-Up and Hair Artist Bria Flores, Assistant Alyssa Chrencik, and Stylist LaFawn Wesson.
Frank Rice complimented the crew. “This crew really set the new standard. I’ve worked on sets where there were twice the crew members, and stuff didn’t get done.” With around 50 cast members, the majority of the shots consisted of the morning outdoor pool scene and the evening indoor casino scene.
“The only obstacle we were fighting was the rapidly setting sun, and the need to be quiet after 8pm. So really, it was just a race against the clock the entire time. But, we pulled it off like champs” Nick Lam boasts. “Mandy takes direction well, is generous and selfless in the performance she puts forth, never acts a diva, and handles stress well. She speaks to others with ease and grace and was willing to work with me in every aspect of production.”
Frank agreed “There were several issues that came up, but again, like she always does, she finds a way to make it happen. That’s what I like best about her. No excuses, just results. I always enjoy Mandy. We just get each other and that makes it a great experience.”
“I really enjoyed myself, but there wasn’t any time for hanging out or even eating,” Mandy says. “I was constantly in hair and make-up or a costume change. But I loved the challenge of acting as this character, and it was a blast. The crew really worked well together.”
After filming was wrapped, the footage was sent to Editor Jacob Voelzke. Several notes and edits were made, and shortly thereafter, the final cut was sent to Colorist Nathan Pena. The entire editing process took less thank two months.
They all hope that upon public release, that the video receives airtime on local networks, MTV2 or VH1 underground rotation. Frank adds, “A lot of my friends have already bought the song from itunes.”
